Center for
Transformative Health (CTH)

Research that moves. Communities that lead

Our Approach

The Center for Transformative Health works to transform health outcomes for communities the public health system has not adequately served. Anchored at Texas Southern University, we conduct community-engaged epidemiological and translational research that produces the evidence, frameworks, and infrastructure Houston's communities need to understand and respond to the conditions shaping their health. Our work spans infectious disease, chronic disease, and the structural systems that connect them — and through our translational arm, the Institute of Urban Public Health, we partner with communities to turn research into action.

Areas of Focus

  • Long COVID and Post-Acute Infection

How Long COVID and other post-acute infection syndromes affect Houston's communities focusing on the populations who carried the highest burden of acute infection and have continued to carry the highest burden of its aftermath.

  • Infection–Chronic Disease Interactions

Advances the scientific argument that has not been adequately developed in mainstream public health: that infectious and chronic disease are not separate domains that occasionally intersect, but interacting systems that shape each other in ways the field has been organized not to see.

  • Community Health Research and Infrastructure

How communities understand, document, and respond to the conditions shaping their health and partners with communities to build the infrastructure they need to do so on their own terms.
